We went to Mora!

We went to Mora!

An opportunity suddenly arose, so Alex and I, on very short notice, booked a little 2-day getaway to Mora. Mora is 3.5 hours northwest of Stockholm, and winter has very much arrived here—snowy and very cold. It's a cute, quaint little town, and maybe finally the place where I would pass my driving exam? Keep reading to find out!

Mora is famous for a long-distance skiing competition held on the first Sunday in March every year called Vasaloppet. It's 90 km long, starting in Sälen and finishing here in Mora. The first Sunday in March also happens to be the day I was born, in 1988, at 8:10 in the morning—10 minutes after the start of the race. So, I feel some connection to it somehow, me and Vasaloppet. I do enjoy cross-country skiing (at least the last time I did it 20 years ago), and I've always thought, why go downhill when you can simply go straight?

When we arrived on Sunday evening, the streets were completely empty, and it felt like walking through a ghost town. The hotel turned out to have a sauna, so guess what we did that night!

On Monday, I explored Mora City in daylight while walking to a driving school for a booked lesson to familiarize myself with the local roads.

When Alex wasn't busy with work, I took him on a walk, enjoying the beautiful winter landscape.

In the evening, we went to Käk och Plock, a surprisingly busy restaurant. The beef tartare was one of the best I've had! Alex got to cut his meat with another famous item associated with Mora—a Mora knife.

So, on Tuesday, I slept as long as possible to stave off the nervousness before my driving test. Today was the day. I started with another lesson in the morning to warm up a bit. In the afternoon, I headed to the test.

I won't bore you with the details, but I did great, and now I have a driving license. The examiner was so nice and when he told me I had passed, I almost fell a bit in love with him.

Now we are on our way back home. A sweet little adventure, full of snow, cold, and nerves, but ending on a very happy note.

Goodbye, Mora. I will always love you.
